MEET THE TEAM
The radiation oncology department is made up of many different team members who work together to create personalized treatment plans that are specific to each patient. Keep reading to learn more about the role that each team member plays in developing your radiation treatment.
RADIATION ONCOLOGIST
The Radiation Oncologist (or doctor) is in charge of determining the type of treatment the patient will get.  The oncologist works with other members in the department to create a radiation treatment plan specific to each individual patient.
DOSIMETRIST
The Dosimetrist uses a specialized computer program to develop the radiation plan. This computer program helps the dosimetrist to create a specific treatment, using guidelines from the doctor, to create a treatment plan to achieve the doctor's goals.
PHYSICIST
The Physicist performs calculations and checks to ensure that the treatment is delivered accurately and according to the plan. Physicists monitor the radiation dose received by the patient during their treatment to verify that it matches the doctor's orders.
RADIATION THERAPIST
Radiation Therapists are the team members that deliver the radiation treatment. The therapists position patients in the treatment room and verify that the treatment will be delivered accurately to the specified treatment area.
NURSE
The Nursing staff helps the Radiation Oncologist to monitor patient health as they progress through treatment. Nurses also discuss side effect management and general health concerns. Patients meet with nursing staff once a week but can request to see them more often if needed.
SUPPORT STAFF
Staff that works to support the Oncology department consists of social workers, dietitians, naturopaths, etc., who work to aide in the additional needs of patients. Such needs include counseling, financial assistance, transportation support, dietary assistance, and much more. Patients are encouraged to discuss any hardships they are facing with support staff to get access to the many resources offered by OHSU.
